Backup and Restore in Windows Server

 

 

What You Need

  • Windows Server (2012/2016/2019/2022)
  • External or internal storage (HDD/Network/USB)
  • Administrator access
  • Windows Server Backup feature

Step 1: Install Windows Server Backup

  • Open Server Manager
  • Click Manage > Add Roles and Features
  • Choose Features
  • Check Windows Server Backup
  • Click Install

 

Once installed, access it from Tools > Windows Server Backup

Step 2: Create a Backup

  • Open Windows Server Backup
  • Click Local Backup > Backup Once or Backup Schedule
  • Choose:
  • Full server (entire system)
  • Custom (select drives/folders)
  • Choose the destination (e.g., network share, external disk)
  • Confirm and run the backup

Step 3: Schedule Automatic Backups

  • Select Backup Schedule
  • Choose backup time (e.g., daily at 10 PM)
  • Define data to backup and destination
  • Complete the wizard

This ensures regular automatic backups.

Step 4: Restore from Backup

  • Open Windows Server Backup
  • Click Local Backup > Recover
  • Select the backup location
  • Choose what to restore:
  • Files and folders
  • Volumes
  • System State
  • Complete the restore wizard
